The Experience

The experience starts at a comfortable visitor center with an informative video about dog sledding as Alaska's state sport. Your guide fits you with winter gear if you need it, then walks you out to meet your team of four-legged Alaskan Husky athletes. Once you step onto the sled, the guide takes the helm while the dogs pull you across frozen lakes, through spruce forests, and along open vistas — 6 miles on the actual training trails the Iditarod mushers use to prepare. The quiet of the sled gliding through the landscape is part of what makes it distinct from other winter activities in the state.

After the ride, you spend time with the huskies, petting them and taking photos. The whole outing runs about two hours. Winter gear is provided if you don't have it, and complimentary coffee or tea is available. Your guide speaks English and can answer questions about the dogs, the terrain, and what mushing means in Alaska.
