A two-hour dog sledding adventure in Willow, Alaska, where you mush a team of retired Iditarod sled dogs over hills and through snow-covered terrain. You'll ride in a custom sled built for two passengers plus a guide, taking turns at the front and back runner so both of you can experience handling the team. The guide stays with you throughout to build your skills and share local history. Available November through early May, depending on snow conditions.

The Experience

What makes this different from watching sled dogs run is that you're the one holding the lines. You arrive at Snowhook, meet your team of 8 to 12 dogs—many of them veterans of the Iditarod—and get outfitted in snowsuits, boots and gloves. After warming up around a campfire and hearing trail stories from your guide, you climb into the sled. One passenger sits up front while the other stands on the back runner behind the guide, feet planted to help steer and brake. Halfway through the two hours, you swap positions so everyone gets to feel what mushing actually takes.

The terrain isn't groomed flatness. You'll climb real hills, navigate twists, and cross sections where the dogs' power becomes obvious—the sled accelerates, the snow sprays, and you're suddenly moving faster than you expected. Your guide stays right there, building your confidence with the team, pointing out the landscape, and explaining how these dogs live and train. The guide speaks English or French, so language isn't a barrier to understanding what's happening beneath your feet.

The adventure runs from November through early May, so timing depends on snow conditions in any given year. Lunch is available if you want to add it at checkout. Children from age 2 can ride, though the activity isn't recommended for pregnant travelers. The whole experience—gear, guide, the dogs themselves—is included in the price; you show up ready to mush.
