The Experience
The first thing I noticed was how green everything looked—like someone had just dialed up the color. We’d barely started when our guide, Jamie (born and raised here), handed out sparkling water and pointed out a mural I’d have missed on my own. I could smell coffee drifting from somewhere nearby as we rolled past the South Park Blocks, students lounging under old elms, someone strumming a guitar. It felt like the city was waking up around us, but in that slow Portland way—nobody rushing.
We stopped at the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park, which honestly sounded a bit formal to me at first. But standing there among thousands of roses (I think Jamie said 10,000?), it was just…overwhelming in a good way. The air was thick with this sweet scent—almost syrupy—and I kept brushing petals with my fingers because they didn’t look real. Jamie told us how Portland became the “City of Roses” and laughed when I tried to guess which variety was his favorite (apparently it changes every year). There were families picnicking on the grass, a couple taking selfies by some neon-pink blooms, and for a second I forgot we were on a tour at all.
Pittock Mansion came next, perched up on the hillside like something out of an old movie. The view over Portland is wild—you get both sides of the river and if you squint through the clouds you can see Mt. Hood off in the distance. We didn’t go inside but wandered around outside; the stone felt cold under my hand and there was this weird hush except for crows arguing overhead. Jamie shared stories about the family who built it (industrialists, apparently) but what stuck with me was just how quiet it got up there compared to downtown.
Driving through Southeast Portland later—Hawthorne, Division, Belmont—I started to get why people call this place eccentric. Old houses painted every color you can imagine, food carts everywhere (the fried chicken one smelled unreal), and people waving from their porches like they knew us. We passed Pioneer Square too—Jamie called it “Portland’s living room”—and he wasn’t kidding; there were chess players set up right in the middle of everything. By then I’d lost track of all the neighborhoods but that didn’t really matter.
