The tour starts in the southeast corner of Director Park, near the intersection of SW Taylor and SW Park Ave, across from the Regal Fox Tower. Parking is available on nearby streets or in adjacent lots; the MAX light rail stops a block away at Pioneer Square. From there, the guide walks you through the South Park Blocks and explains why they were laid out the way they were—a design choice that tells you something about how Portland's founders thought about the city center. Much of what happened in Portland shows up in the buildings themselves: cast-iron-fronted structures from the 1800s sit alongside the grandly disastrous post-modern Portland Building, and each one marks a moment when the city made a choice about what it wanted to be.

The route passes the Portland Art Museum (exterior only) and reaches Pioneer Courthouse Square, where the guide connects the square's past as an education hub to its role in Portland's cultural conflicts. The tour doesn't skip the complicated parts: you'll hear about back-room deals, early deaths and greed alongside the story of how Portland became the first city on the West Coast with a fine art museum, and how it became a lightning rod for racial justice protests. Urban art and Pearl District extends the route to include the Pearl District's transformation and the city's contemporary art scene.
