The Experience

“You know, Portlanders don’t even use umbrellas,” our guide Ben grinned as he waved us into the van outside our downtown hotel. I believed him — it was drizzling but nobody on the street seemed to care. We started at Pioneer Courthouse Square, where a guy played saxophone under a tree and people just sat around like they had nowhere else to be. Ben pointed out the carved yellow roses on the columns (I’d never have noticed), and told us how this spot gets called Portland’s living room. It did feel like that — open, busy but somehow unhurried.

We drove through the Alphabet District next. The houses looked straight out of some old movie, all Victorian porches and creaky wooden steps. On NW 23rd Avenue, there were people sipping coffee outside even though it was barely 10am — apparently that’s normal here. I tried an oat milk latte at a tiny café (it tasted like breakfast in a cup), and we wandered past boutiques with names I couldn’t pronounce. There was a bakery where you could smell cinnamon before you even saw the door.

The International Rose Test Garden was my favorite part of this Portland city tour. Even though it wasn’t peak bloom, you could still catch hints of perfume in the air, and petals scattered across wet benches. Ben told us about how they test new varieties here; he handed me one bloom and said its name in Latin — I forgot instantly but remember how soft it felt between my fingers. From up there, you get this view over downtown with Mount Hood somewhere behind the clouds (he swore it was there). We joked about coming back for a picnic if we ever saw sun again.

We ended up in the Pearl District, which used to be warehouses but now has art galleries and Powell’s City of Books — honestly overwhelming in size. I lost track of everyone for a bit just wandering between shelves; found an old travel journal someone had scribbled notes in. There’s something about bookstores that makes time go funny. Anyway, after that we headed back through South Park Blocks where students lounged on damp grass and someone played guitar badly but didn’t seem to care. The whole thing felt kind of perfectly imperfect — like Portland itself.
