The Experience
“You’re not really a Portlander until you’ve gotten lost in Powell’s,” our guide said, and honestly, I believed her. We’d just squeezed into the Pearl District — old warehouses turned into coffee shops and galleries, people biking past with rain jackets flapping. The air smelled like wet pavement and fresh espresso (maybe that was just me clutching my cup). Our group was small enough that everyone got to ask weird questions — someone wanted to know if the Pittock Mansion was haunted (our guide grinned, “I’ll let you decide after you see the attic”).
The drive up to Pittock Mansion felt like climbing out of the city’s noise for a minute. Trees everywhere, moss on everything. When we stepped out, it was quiet except for wind in the branches and some crows arguing overhead. The view — Mt. Hood just kind of floating there behind downtown — made me stop talking mid-sentence. I don’t even remember what I was saying. There’s something about seeing all of Portland at once that makes you wonder how it all fits together.
We wandered through Washington Park on the way to the International Rose Test Garden (which is not just hype — even in late season, there were petals everywhere). The roses had names I couldn’t pronounce; Li laughed when I tried to say one in French. The smell hit me before we even saw them — not sweet exactly, more like earth after rain mixed with something floral. Later we crossed one of those old bridges over the Willamette River (I think it was Hawthorne?) and ended up near Old Town where the stories get a little wild — Shanghai tunnels and all that.
I still think about Powell’s City of Books though — it’s massive but somehow cozy, full of people flipping pages or just wandering around looking slightly overwhelmed (me included). If you’re into people-watching or just want to see what makes Portland tick, this day trip from downtown really does give you a sense of its weirdness and warmth. There’s bottled water in the van but bring your own curiosity.
