The boat leaves Portland and heads upstream on the Willamette River, passing under the Steel Bridge (a double-deck vertical-lift span opened in 1912 that carries road traffic, light rail, and bicycles on separate decks), and the Hawthorne Bridge, the oldest vertical-lift bridge still operating in the United States. Both are working bridges, not monuments. You watch them function as the city moves across them. The captain shares stories about the river's role in Portland's early settlement and the industrial history that shaped the region.

Willamette Falls appears as a 42-foot horseshoe-shaped waterfall caused by a basalt shelf in the riverbed, stretching 1,500 feet wide. It's the largest waterfall by water volume in the Northwest and the 18th largest in the world. The falls powered the lumber mills that built Oregon City in the 1800s and still operate the locks: the oldest continuously operating multi-lift lock system in the United States. You approach close enough to photograph and feel the scale of the water moving through the landscape.
