The Experience

Our guide met us at the entrance and right away started talking about the people who'd actually gone over the falls in barrels — some survived, some didn't, and he had the dates and names down. That's the kind of detail that sticks with you. We headed straight to Terrapin Point first, which is the closest you can get to the Horseshoe Falls without being in the water, and honestly, the scale of it hits different when you're standing there. The roar is constant. The mist comes up and soaks your clothes. You can feel the power of it.

After Terrapin Point, we walked over to Luna Island, which sits between the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls — it's a smaller island but the perspective changes everything. From there you see both waterfalls at once, and the guide pointed out how the water moves differently on each side, which I wouldn't have noticed on my own. He also told us where to stand later if we wanted to catch the evening light show and fireworks, which was practical information that actually mattered. The Cave of the Winds tour itself is self-guided once you're down there, but you get skip-the-line tickets included, so you're not standing around waiting while everyone else queues up. There's a movie called "The World Changed Here" that plays as part of the experience, and then you're down in the actual cave area near the Bridal Veil Falls, where the spray is intense and the sound is almost overwhelming.

The whole thing moves at a reasonable pace — you're not rushed, but you're also not wandering aimlessly. All the fees and taxes are wrapped in, so there's no surprise at the end.
