The experience

"Wait, you actually get to walk under the falls?" Yeah, that's the Cave of the Winds part, and it's the thing people keep talking about after. The day starts with hotel pickup in an air-conditioned van, then straight to the Maid of the Mist dock. The boat's been running since 1846, which means a lot of people have stood where you're about to stand. You get waterproof ponchos (everyone does), and then the boat moves toward the American Falls first, then Bridal Veil, then the Canadian Horseshoe. The mist hits you before you expect it. It's not gentle.

After the boat, your guide walks you through a small museum and a cinema experience about Nikola Tesla: the guy who figured out how to use the falls' water to generate electricity, and we're still doing it that way. Then comes the part that makes this different from just showing up on your own: you walk on a wooden deck right under the Bridal Veil Falls. You can actually touch the water. The deck gets rebuilt every year because of the force, and when you're standing there, you understand why. If you want more, there's the hurricane deck, where 60,000 gallons of water comes down over you: optional, but most people do it. Your guide gives you the history and the geology the whole time, so it's not just standing there getting soaked.

The Observation Deck comes next, up an elevator, and the view from above is the opposite angle. You see the water before it falls, the moment it tips over the edge. Luna Island and Terrapin Point are stops too, where your guide points out details about the American Falls and the Horseshoe from different vantage points.
