The Experience

The boat leaves the dock and moves straight toward the roar. You're on the brand-new electric Maid of the Mist, and it cuts through the water toward the base of the falls—the Horseshoe, the American, the Bridal Veil all visible as the boat angles closer. The guide narrates facts about the falls as you approach, but mostly you're watching the water column get larger. There's no real way to prepare for how loud it is or how much mist actually reaches you, even though you've seen the photos.

After the boat ride, the group heads to Cave of the Winds, where you descend 200 feet down wooden boardwalks to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. A poncho is provided—and you'll need it. The Hurricane Deck option lets you get soaked if you want, or you can stay on the lower platform and still feel the force of 700,000 gallons of water per second moving past you. The guide, who's spent years around Niagara Falls state park, points out details most visitors miss: the way the water moves, the age of the rock, the history of the power plant visible from certain angles. The tour keeps groups small—six people maximum—so you're not shuffling through crowds.

From there you hit Prospect Point, the only spot on the American side where all three falls are visible at once. The Crow's Nest Walkway takes you right up to the crest of the American Falls, and then Three Sisters Island rounds out the viewpoints.
