The experience

“My grandfather always said, wine is just memory in a bottle,” Alejandra told us as she led us through the cool shadowy halls of Bodega Santa Rosa. I liked her right away. She had this way of making you feel like you’d known her for ages, even though we’d only just met outside the old iron gates. The air smelled faintly of musty oak and something sweet, maybe fermenting grapes or just old stone. It was quieter than I expected, almost hushed except for our footsteps echoing off the cellar walls.

I kept trailing my fingers along the rough brick as we walked deeper underground: apparently, this is the largest active underground cellar in all of South America. You can actually feel the history here. It’s not polished or staged. Alejandra pointed out dusty bottles from decades ago, each one with its own story (she laughed when I tried to pronounce “Methode Champenoise”, I think I mangled it).
