The experience
What makes this different from a wine bar in the city is the cellar itself. You arrive at a working winery outside Montevideo and step into the vintage cellar (the actual space where the wines age in tanks and barrels) with a winery expert who walks you through what you're tasting. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from Montevideo and brings you out to the countryside, where the guide shares the stories behind Uruguay's wine culture and the Tannat grape that's gaining recognition worldwide. Many of the wines you'll taste aren't sold abroad, so this is where you find them.
The tasting itself comes with a light lunch: cheeses, cured hams, and empanadas. If you want more, you can upgrade at checkout to a full meal with a larger wine selection and a main dish plus dessert. The whole experience runs about 5 hours. Small groups keep the pace relaxed and the conversation real. It feels less like a tour stop and more like hanging out with someone who knows the region.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
What exactly is Tannat and why is it such a big deal in Uruguay?
Tannat is the grape Uruguay is known for, and it's gaining global recognition after decades of being overlooked. The winery expert will walk you through what makes it distinctive and how Uruguayan producers are making it their own, separate from the Tannat tradition in France where it originated.
Do I have to book the full meal or can I just do the tasting?
You start with the light lunch option: cheeses, cured hams, and empanadas paired with the wines. At checkout, you can upgrade to the full winery lunch if you want a main dish and dessert included as well.
How long does the whole thing take and what time do I need to be ready?
The activity runs about 5 hours from pickup to return. Pickup from Montevideo is included, so you don't arrange separate transport.
Is this a huge group or will it stay small?
It's a small group tour, which means the pace stays manageable and you actually get to talk with the winery expert and other guests instead of being herded through with fifty people.
