The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel, airport, or cruise port in either Dubai or Abu Dhabi, then heads straight to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. You'll walk through one of the world's largest mosques (it holds 41,000 worshippers), and see the domes, minarets, stained-glass windows, and ornate chandeliers that define its scale. Women are provided a traditional abaya if needed. Men and women both follow a strict dress code (loose clothing covering arms and legs, head covering for women). Your guide explains the history and religious significance as you move through the space.

From there, the route flows through Abu Dhabi's landmarks: a stroll along the Corniche with the sea on one side and downtown skyline on the other; a photo stop at Emirates Palace, the five-star hotel with its lush gardens and silver fountains; a drive past Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest stone building in the city. Qasr Al Watan, the Presidential Palace, is optional and costs an extra $20 if you want to enter and see the chandeliers, carvings, and exhibits on UAE history. You'll also pass the Etihad Towers (the same complex featured in the car-chase scene from Furious 7), and stop at the Dates Souk to taste fresh dates in dozens of varieties.

The afternoon includes free time at Yas Mall for shopping or an optional lunch (at your own cost), then continues through Saadiyat Island to the Louvre Abu Dhabi. This is where the tour differs from standard itineraries: instead of driving past, you actually enter. The museum holds over 600 historical and cultural works, and the architecture itself (a silvery dome that floats above the building and casts a geometric light pattern called the Rain of Light) is designed for photos. Your guide cannot accompany you inside (museum rules prevent city tour guides from entering), but you have time to walk through on your own.
