The Experience

“You see that?” our driver asked, pointing out the window as we crossed into Abu Dhabi. He was talking about the way the skyline shifts — glass towers and then suddenly the white domes of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I’d seen photos before, but walking up to it felt different. The marble under my feet was cold even in the late morning sun, and inside it was so quiet I caught myself whispering. Our guide, Farid, told us stories about how artisans came from all over — Italy for marble, India for stonework. I tried to count the chandeliers (I lost track). There was a faint scent of incense somewhere in the air. I didn’t expect to feel moved by a building but… yeah.

After that we stopped at Emirates Palace — just for a quick look (you can’t really go wandering everywhere unless you’re staying there). It’s gold and palm trees and people taking selfies in front of fountains. Then Etihad Towers for those panoramic views; I’m not great with heights but it was worth it for that sweep of blue Gulf water. The Heritage Village was next — kind of like stepping into another time. There were old boats pulled up on sand and a man weaving baskets who smiled when I tried to ask about his craft (my Arabic is basically nonexistent). The Corniche had families strolling and kids on scooters; sea breeze, a bit sticky but nice after all that air conditioning.

Lunch break at Marina Mall — honestly nothing fancy but good shawarma hits different after walking around all morning. Farid suggested trying dates at the local market nearby (“Best in UAE!” he claimed), so we did. The smell there — sweet and earthy — stuck to my hands even after I wiped them on my jeans. Last stop: Louvre Abu Dhabi. Light filtered through that crazy dome ceiling like rain patterns on water. Some art made me pause longer than I thought I would; maybe it was just being tired or maybe something else.

Ferrari World was on the itinerary too — not really my thing but some people in our group went wild for it (roller coasters inside? Sure). By the time we headed back to Dubai, everyone was quieter than in the morning. Maybe just full or maybe letting things settle in their heads. Sometimes you don’t realize what hit you until later.
