The experience

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque anchors the day. One of the world's largest mosques, it holds 40,000 worshippers and visitors and stands as a meeting point between Islam and world cultures: its architects were British, Italian and Emirati, and the design borrowed from Turkey, Morocco, Pakistan and Egypt. Inside, the prayer hall overflows with natural light and houses the world's largest handmade chandelier and carpet, both meticulously crafted. Gold-leaf calligraphy encircles the domes in Quranic verses. The reflective pools that surround the courtyard and the distinctive onion-top domes frame the building from every angle.

From there, the route moves through Abu Dhabi's heritage and modern layers. At Heritage Village, you walk through a reconstruction of a traditional oasis settlement (a souk, mosque and encampment from pre-modern Abu Dhabi), and watch artisans at work: potters, glass blowers and weavers on looms demonstrate their skills and sometimes invite visitors to try. The Dates Market follows, where you browse local date varieties, sweets and spice-shop goods. Then comes the waterfront: the Corniche stretches eight kilometres with manicured pathways, cafés and a lifeguarded beach, and you stop for photos at Emirates Palace, the golden-domed hotel that spans a kilometre wing to wing and holds 1,002 chandeliers. Qasr Al Watan, the presidential palace opened to the public, appears as a photo point. So do Etihad Towers and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. A drive past Yas Island shows Ferrari World, Yas Water World and the F1 circuit from outside.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide (speaking English or Arabic) stays with you throughout. Hotel pickup is arranged before the day starts. The tour moves at a relaxed pace, built around stops rather than long stretches of walking, and suits all fitness levels. Infants can sit on an adult's lap or use a specialized seat.
