The Experience

The pickup was supposed to be at 9 a.m., but the driver called to say traffic was heavier than usual — so we left Abu Dhabi a few minutes late, which meant the whole rhythm of the day shifted slightly. The mosque itself is quiet and bright, and the photography rules are strict — ask before you shoot anything, and don't photograph local women. It's a real place, not a backdrop, and the restrictions exist for a reason.

By afternoon we were at Jumeirah Beach, a white sand strip where you could see why people come to Dubai, and then the Islamic Art Gallery, which holds pieces and traditional goods that most visitors skip. The final stop was Dubai Mall — over 1,200 stores, two department stores, hundreds of places to eat. The guide dropped us there and the day opened up. You had time to shop, to eat on your own, to wander. No group lunch meant no waiting for stragglers, no set menu. You picked what you wanted and when you wanted it. The mall sits right next to the Burj Khalifa, so if you wanted to look up at the world's tallest building while you ate, you could. The drive back to Abu Dhabi took about an hour, and by then the day had already started feeling like something you'd done weeks ago, not hours.
