Koh Lanta Old Town Mangrove Tour: Longtail Boat & Lunch
The mangroves here shelter fish, crabs and shrimp in their roots, and a longtail boat is how you see them.
A six-hour tour of Koh Lanta combines a walking tour of the old town (buildings over 100 years old, still built in traditional wooden shophouse style) with a longtail boat ride through Tung Yee Peng mangrove forest. You walk the cement path through the mangroves on foot, then board the boat to explore deeper into the forest and spot wildlife: colorful birds, mudskippers, fiddler crabs, and monkeys at the monkey point. Hotel pickup, a Thai lunch and a professional English-speaking guide are included.

The experience
Six hours covers two sides of Koh Lanta's character. The day starts with pickup from your hotel and a walk through the old town, where shophouses built over a century ago still stand in their original wooden style. Your guide explains what you're seeing as you move through the streets. This is not a museum but a working neighborhood where locals still live and trade. After the old town, you head to Tung Yee Peng village on the east coast.
The mangrove forest there is almost as large as the island itself. You start on foot, crossing a bridge at the water's edge and then walking a cement path that cuts through the trees. The mangrove roots create a sheltered zone where fishes, crabs, oysters, lobsters and shrimp breed and hide. Once you've walked the path, you board a longtail boat with your guide and motor deeper into the forest to watch for wildlife: mudskippers that skip across the mud, fiddler crabs waving their oversized claws, and the variety of birds that nest in the canopy. A stop at the monkey point gives you a chance to watch monkeys swim and dive.
Lunch is a Thai set meal at a local restaurant, eaten after the morning's walking and before the boat ride. You also get drinking water, fresh seasonal fruit and a snack. A life jacket is provided for the boat, and the tour includes basic accident insurance. Hotel drop-off closes the day.
