You make the vitamins the elephants eat that day.

A half-day activity at Ran-Tong Save & Rescue Elephant Centre in Chiang Mai where you dress as a mahout, learn about the sanctuary's rescue work, prepare food for the elephants, and walk with them in their natural habitat. Hotel pickup is included, and the experience runs about five hours with lunch and a live English or Chinese-speaking guide.

The Experience

The morning starts with pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel and a drive roughly an hour north to Ran-Tong in Mae Taeng District. The sanctuary rescues abused elephants from across Thailand and has brought over 40 to safety since 2009. When you arrive, you change into Mahout Style Karen clothes—the traditional dress of elephant handlers—and the learning begins. A guide walks you through the centre's mission and teaches you how the rescued elephants are cared for, what their injuries or conditions are, and how long they've been there.

The core of the experience is hands-on: you make vitamins and supplements for the elephants, including pregnant, injured, and elderly ones that need extra nutrition. Then you meet the elephants themselves, walk alongside them, and watch them move through their habitat the way they would without human interference. This is not a riding experience or a performance—it's time spent observing and being near the animals as they live. You bring a camera, and the guide is there to answer questions about what you're seeing.

Lunch is Thai food with seasonal fruit and water, served before you change back into your own clothes and return to Chiang Mai. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet or dirty, bring sandals that can handle mud, and pack mosquito spray. Travel insurance is included in the booking.

Is this one for you?Book this if you want to spend time with rescued elephants doing real care work—making their food, walking beside them—rather than watching a performance or riding. The small group and hands-on setup mean you're learning from a guide and contributing to the sanctuary's daily work, not observing from a distance.
