The Experience

We rolled out of Chiang Mai just after sunrise, still yawning, and I remember the van windows fogged up from the early heat. Our guide, Noi, handed out cold bottled water and grinned when she saw me eyeing the mountains—“Wait until you meet the elephants,” she said. The sanctuary was quieter than I’d pictured. No crowds, just a few of us watching these huge animals flick dust on their backs and nudge each other with those slow, careful movements. I could smell earth and something sweet in the air—maybe bananas? One elephant came close enough that I could see her eyelashes. I didn’t expect to feel so calm standing there, honestly.

After we said goodbye to the elephants (harder than I thought), we drove north to Wat Ban Den. The temple is all sharp blue rooftops and gold edges—almost too bright under the midday sun. Noi told us about Lanna architecture while we wandered through quiet courtyards. At one point I tried to pronounce a Buddha statue’s name in Thai; she laughed so hard she had to lean against a pillar. There was incense burning somewhere nearby and monks moving silently past us in orange robes. It felt peaceful but also kind of alive, if that makes sense.

The last stop was Bua Tong—the Sticky Waterfall. It looks slippery but your feet just stick right on the limestone as you climb up through splashing water (I half expected to fall flat on my face but somehow didn’t). The rocks feel rough under your toes, not slimy at all. We cooled off in one of the pools at the top, jungle sounds everywhere—cicadas, birds I couldn’t name—and ate our packed lunch with wet hands. On the drive back to Chiang Mai I kept thinking about how gentle those elephants seemed. Still do sometimes.
