The Experience

We were bouncing along a narrow road north of Chiang Mai before I’d even finished my coffee. The van was quiet except for our guide, Nok, who pointed out the Nepia grass fields as we passed — “that’s elephant breakfast,” she grinned. I didn’t expect to be so close to these animals so soon. When we stepped into DooDoi Elephant Sanctuary, you could hear the low rumble of elephants before you saw them. No chains or fences, just a muddy field and a few mahouts chatting in Thai under a tree.

There’s something about standing next to an elephant that makes you feel small in the best way. We helped chop up pumpkin and sugarcane for their lunch (I’m still picking bits of sticky fruit from my shoes). The mahouts showed us how to offer it — palm flat, fingers back — and Li laughed when I tried to say “thank you” in Thai (I probably butchered it). The elephants moved slow but somehow managed to swipe a whole bunch of bananas in one go. They really do have personalities; one kept nudging me for more snacks while another just wanted to splash in the mud.

After lunch (simple but good — rice, veggies, nothing fancy), Nok rounded us up for the drive to Bua Tong, the Sticky Waterfall. It’s weirdly named but honestly fits: you can actually climb straight up the limestone rocks without slipping. The water felt cold on my feet after all that sun. Some local kids were racing each other up and down; I barely made it halfway before laughing too hard to keep going. I still think about that cool spray and how nobody seemed rushed here — just voices echoing off wet stone and sunlight flickering through leaves.
