Step-by-step itinerary
Elephant sanctuary and bamboo rafting
- Change into traditional Karen clothing
- Prepare food for elephants
- Observe elephants in natural habitat
- Drink herbal tea and rest at waterfall
- Craft a Thai cultural souvenir
- Relax on bamboo rafting down Wang River
The experience
Start the morning at Joy Elephant Sanctuary in the forests outside Chiang Mai. You'll change into traditional Karen clothing and move straight into hands-on work: preparing food for the elephants while learning their history and behavior. The elephants roam freely in the jungle, so observation happens on their terms, not in a staged setting. Between activities you sip herbal tea and take a cooling break at a nearby waterfall, which gives the sanctuary's rhythm its own pace.
Before leaving the sanctuary, you craft a Thai handmade souvenir to take home. Then the day shifts to water. You board a bamboo raft on the Wang River and float downstream through forest, listening to the river sounds as the landscape moves past. The raft ride is the chill counterpoint to the morning's hands-on work with the elephants: a chance to sit and absorb what you've seen.
Pickup from your Chiang Mai hotel is included, along with lunch, bottled water, towel, coffee and tea. The guide speaks English or Thai. Photography is free throughout the day.

Is this one for you?The morning involves hands-on work with the elephants and walking in the sanctuary, then the afternoon is a relaxed float on the raft, so the day balances activity with downtime. Young children need close supervision on the water, and the full 8 to 9 hours means an early start and a late return, so plan accordingly if you have other commitments.
