The experience
The day starts with a 1.5-hour drive south from Chiangmai City through agricultural land and forested hills, with a stop at a local market to pick up coffee and snacks. You then spend an hour on a bamboo raft before hiking for 2 hours through jungle, farmland and rice terraces, passing waterfalls where you can swim. The route is built around seeing the landscape on foot and water, not rushing through it.
At Chiang Mai Elephant Home, you change into a uniform and eat a buffet lunch of traditional Thai food and fresh fruit. Your guide explains elephant behavior and history, and you spend the afternoon observing the elephants in their natural habitat. The sanctuary is structured around the animals living without chains or saddles: a deliberate shift from the practices at some other elephant facilities. The money raised from visits funds rescue operations, veterinary care and the land itself.
The return drive to your hotel takes about an hour and a half, with drop-off around 6 pm. You'll need to bring insect repellent, sunscreen, a bathing suit, hiking shoes and a towel. A camera is optional. The tour runs about 9 hours total.
