The Experience
The Machame route is the longest path up Kilimanjaro, which is why it works for acclimatization. You start at Machame Gate at 1,800 meters after a morning pickup from your hotel, walk through coffee and banana plantations tended by local Chagga people, then enter the rainforest. The first camp sits at 2,835 meters. From there the route climbs through moorland, crosses the Shira plateau, and descends to Baranco Camp in a valley below the Barranco wall—a deliberate up-and-down that helps your body adjust to altitude before the final push.
Days four and five are shorter, designed to let you rest and acclimatize while still gaining elevation. You climb the steep Barranco wall (which looks harder than it is), traverse the Karanga Valley with views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, then reach Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. Dinner is early. Around midnight you wake for tea and cookies, then climb scree for four to five hours in darkness. You reach Stella Point on the crater rim as the sun rises, then walk another hour to Uhuru Peak. After photos at the summit, you descend the same day to Millennium Camp, then finish the final descent to Mweka Gate the next morning, where you collect your certificate before heading back to your hotel.
Your guide is a local from Kilimanjaro or elsewhere in Tanzania, trained in safety and first aid, fluent in English and often in Spanish, French or German as well. They know the mountain's flora, fauna, geology and history. Hotel pickup is included, as are all campsites and meals on the mountain. You'll need good cardiovascular fitness and should train beforehand; the altitude and the long days demand it.
What’s included

- all seven nights in mountain campsites.
- meals throughout the trek.

Is this one for you?Your guide speaks English, Spanish, French or German, so choose based on the language you're most comfortable following at altitude—this matters when you're tired and the guide is explaining the route ahead or pointing out landmarks. The seven-day schedule suits trekkers who want time to acclimatize rather than rush the climb, and who have trained seriously beforehand; it's not a casual walk, and the fitness bar is real.

What's the Machame route and why choose it over other Kilimanjaro paths?
The Machame route is the longest way up Kilimanjaro, taking seven days instead of five or six. The extra time lets your body acclimatize gradually, which improves your chances of reaching the summit comfortably. You climb through distinct zones—rainforest, moorland, alpine desert—and the route includes a deliberate descent to Baranco Camp that helps with acclimatization before the summit push.
How fit do I need to be for this trek?
You need a high level of physical fitness. The trek involves hiking six to seven hours most days at increasing altitude, starting at 1,800 meters and reaching 5,895 meters at the summit. Training beforehand—cardio, hill walking, stair climbing—makes a real difference. The trek is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
What happens on summit day and how long does it take?
You wake around midnight at Barafu Camp, have tea and cookies, then climb scree in darkness for four to five hours to reach Stella Point on the crater rim as the sun rises. From there it's another hour to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. After photos you descend the same day back to Barafu Camp for lunch and rest, then walk down to Millennium Camp for the night.
What's included and what do I need to bring?
Hotel pickup, all campsites, meals on the mountain and a local guide are included. You'll need to bring warm layers, a sleeping bag rated for cold, sturdy hiking boots, a headlamp for the summit climb and personal toiletries. The guide handles safety and first aid; you handle your own fitness and acclimatization.
Do I need any permits or documents to climb Kilimanjaro?
Yes. Park formalities including registration happen at Machame Gate on day one, and you collect your summit certificate at Mweka Gate on the final day. Your operator handles the park fees as part of the trek; bring your passport and check visa requirements for Tanzania before you book.
What's the weather like on the mountain and what should I expect?
The rainforest zone is wet and warm; moorland is cool and can be misty; the alpine desert is cold and dry. Summit night is well below freezing. Weather changes fast at altitude, so layers and waterproof gear are essential. The route crosses the Barranco wall, which is steep but not technical—it looks scarier than it climbs.
