Explore Soufrière's natural wonders

  • See bubbling activity in active volcano
  • Enjoy therapeutic mud bath at volcano
  • Hike Stairway to Heaven between Pitons
  • Experience refreshing waterfall shower
  • Visit heritage Piton monument
  • Admire colorful old French architecture

The experience

The tour starts at Sulphur Springs Park, where you walk into an active volcano and soak in the warm mineral baths: the only drive-in volcano in the Caribbean. From there, the route climbs the "Stairway to Heaven" hike between the two Pitons, the landmark peaks that anchor St. Lucia's skyline and sit on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The physical effort is moderate. The guide sets the pace and the views from between them carry the climb.

After the Pitons, you reach Toraille Waterfall for a freshwater shower and a break in the shade. The tour then loops through Soufrière town itself (the old French colonial buildings with their faded pastel walls, the heritage monument at the Piton base) before returning to the thermal springs for a therapeutic mud bath. Lunch is a buffet served during the day, and the air-conditioned van handles the driving between stops, so the six hours is time spent at the sites, not in transit.

An English-speaking guide leads the whole route and explains what you're standing in front of: the geology of the volcano, the history of the Pitons, the local architecture. Bottled water and alcoholic beverages come with the package. The tour works for families with infants (strollers are fine) and for most fitness levels, though the hike between the Pitons does involve climbing and uneven ground.

What’s included

  • Private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle.
  • an English-speaking guide for the full route.
  • buffet lunch.
  • bottled water and alcoholic beverages.

Is this one for you?The tour runs six hours with a moderate hike between the Pitons and time in the thermal springs, so it suits travelers who want to move through several sites in one day without arranging transport or navigating between them. If you prefer a slower pace or have mobility concerns, the climbing and walking may not fit your comfort level.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What is Sulphur Springs and why is it called a drive-in volcano?

Sulphur Springs is an active geothermal site where you can drive right up to the mineral pools and walk into the volcanic landscape. It's the only drive-in volcano in the Caribbean. You don't hike to it or take a boat. The road brings you to the springs themselves, and you soak in the warm, mineral-rich water and apply the therapeutic mud from the volcano floor.

How difficult is the hike between the Pitons?

The "Stairway to Heaven" hike between the Pitons is moderate and manageable for most fitness levels. It's a climb with uneven ground, but the guide sets the pace and the route is established. The views from between the two peaks are the payoff for the effort.

What happens at Toraille Waterfall?

Toraille Waterfall is a stop where you can shower under the cascading freshwater and cool off. It's a break in the shade during the day and a chance to rinse off before the mud bath later in the tour.

What's included in the lunch?

Lunch is a buffet served during the tour day. Bottled water and alcoholic beverages are also included. Breakfast is not.
