Step-by-step itinerary
Chocolate making and Soufriere tour
- Drive through Soufriere town with history
- Learn chocolate making with local experts
- Hike Tet Paul Nature Trail for views
- Visit drive-in volcano and mud baths
- Enjoy locally prepared Saint Lucian lunch
The experience
The chocolate-making part comes first. A local chocolatier walks you through how cocoa is grown and harvested, then you handle the roasting, grinding and molding yourself. You make a batch to take home, so the learning sticks with you past the day. After that, the tour moves into Soufriere's landscape: you hike Tet Paul Nature Trail, the "Stairway to Heaven", where the guide points out the Pitons, valleys and coast while sharing the area's history and plant life. The trail is the centerpiece of the afternoon's views.
Sulphur Springs Park, the world's only drive-in volcano, comes next. You can soak in the natural volcanic mud baths, which locals say nourish the skin with minerals, and watch the geothermal springs bubble up close. The driver also takes you through Soufriere town itself and gives a brief history of the place. Lunch is a locally prepared meal with Saint Lucian flavors and seasonal ingredients, eaten in a rainforest setting. Complimentary water, soda and beer are available throughout the day.
An air-conditioned vehicle handles the transport between stops, and pickup and drop-off from your hotel or accommodation are included. The guide speaks English and knows the sites well enough to answer questions as you move through them. The day is suitable for all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
