The experience

Three hours in a home kitchen near the Buddha statue at Bahirawakanda Mountain, learning from the women who cook traditional Sri Lankan food every day. Your teachers are the family's wife, sister and mother: no professional chef, just the people who prepare these meals three times daily in their own home. You'll make coconut roti, lufa curry, chicken curry, dhal curry, beetroot curry, mango curry, egg plant moju, mushroom curry, fried potato curry and coconut sambol, then sit down to eat what you've cooked.

The class happens inside their home kitchen, so you get a real sense of Sri Lankan family life alongside the cooking. If you want to understand the ingredients, the family can arrange a visit to the local market beforehand, where they'll explain the spices and vegetables used in each dish. At the end, you take home written recipes so you can repeat the techniques at home. Bottled water is provided throughout.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are available for locations around Kandy city. Public transportation options also run nearby if you prefer to make your own way. The class runs with a live English-speaking guide and accommodates a minimum age of 17.
