The experience

The first thing I remember is the sound of our driver’s horn weaving through the early Colombo traffic: half a melody, half a warning. We’d just landed and already the air felt different: thick with heat and something sweet I couldn’t place. Our guide, Saman, grinned as he loaded our bags into the van and told us we’d be in Sigiriya by evening. I didn’t know yet how many times I’d hear him laugh over the next two weeks (a lot). Not what I expected: green stretching forever, haze curling over rice paddies. At Anuradhapura later that day, we wandered among ruins older than most countries. A monk in saffron robes nodded at us near a sacred tree. I tried to stay quiet but my shoes squeaked embarrassingly on the stone path. That night’s dinner tasted like cardamom and something smoky. I still think about that curry sometimes.

There was a morning at Dambulla Cave Temple when sunlight hit the gold Buddhas just right: almost too bright to look at. In Matale’s spice garden, Priya handed me a cinnamon stick straight from the tree (it smelled warmer than any spice jar back home). By Kandy we’d found our rhythm: temples in the morning, tea museum after lunch, watching locals feed fish at Kandy Lake while kids tried to sell us little paper fans. The train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella was all mist and blue-green tea fields flashing past open windows.
