The Experience
Minneriya National Park holds nearly 170 bird species and a roster of larger animals—toque macaques, sambar deer, buffalo, crocodiles and the occasional Sri Lankan leopard or sloth bear, though the big cats are rarely spotted. The park's 88.9 square kilometers center on the ancient Minneriya Wewa, a reservoir that draws elephants and other wildlife to drink and feed. Jeep safaris run at twilight, when animals are most active and visible across the open scrub and forest.
Your driver speaks English and knows where the elephants congregate on any given day. If weather or recent sightings suggest better odds elsewhere, the route shifts to Hurulu eco park or Kaudulla national park instead—you are not locked into Minneriya if another park is running hotter that afternoon. The jeep is yours alone, so timing and pace stay flexible. Bottled water comes with you; the driver handles navigation and commentary on what moves through the habitat.
The safari runs three to five hours depending on how far you travel and what you encounter. Pickup from your hotel is included, and the driver will track your flight or arrival time if you need collection from a station or airport. Children from age 2 can ride; specialized infant seats are available if you are traveling with a very young child. Entry fees to whichever park you visit are paid separately at the gate.
