The experience

The jeep picks you up from your Dambulla hotel 15 minutes after you're ready in the lobby and drives you to Minneriya National Park. Once inside, you spend three hours on a guided safari across the park's grasslands and forest edges, where the reservoir draws the largest known wild Asian elephant gathering in the world. The herd numbers between 150 and 200 elephants, though some reports count as many as 700. They migrate here from Wasgamuwa National Park to feed on the grass fields and shelter in the forest. Beyond the elephants, the park holds 24 mammal species, 160 bird species, and dozens of reptiles, amphibians and butterflies, though most visitors come for the elephants alone.

Your guide drives the open-sided jeep slowly through the park, stopping when elephants are in view. The dry season is when the herds are largest and most predictable, though the exact location shifts as the animals move between Minneriya, Kawdulla and Hurulu Eco Park. After the safari ends, the jeep returns you to your hotel in Dambulla. The whole outing takes about four and a half hours from pickup to drop-off. Water and refreshments are provided during the drive.
