The experience

You arrive at Minneriya National Park and climb into a 4x4 jeep with your guide, who doubles as the tracker and knows where the elephants move through the day. The safari runs three hours, enough time to navigate the park's game drive routes and catch the elephants at the tank where they congregate. Your guide speaks English and carries binoculars and a water bottle for each person in your group, which stays at six or fewer so the jeep does not feel crowded.

The elephants you see are part of the largest wild gathering of Asian elephants on earth. Every year during the dry season (May through September) water disappears from the surrounding wilderness of Matale, Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee. The herds make an annual pilgrimage to Minneriya tank, where freshwater and tender green grass line the banks. On any given day during peak season, anywhere from 150 to 700 elephants can be in the park at once. You watch them feed, bathe and play in the open, not in a zoo or a staged setting. Your guide will also point out native birds and other flora and fauna the park holds, so birdwatchers often find the safari worth the time alone.

The jeep picks you up and drops you off within 5 km of the park gate. If your hotel sits outside that radius, you can add hotel pickup at checkout. Park entrance tickets are included if you choose the "Jeep with Tickets" option. If you book "Jeep with No Tickets," you arrange entry separately or purchase it on arrival. The price is fixed per vehicle, not per person, so a group of two pays the same as a group of six.
