The experience
The safari runs three hours through rough terrain in a 4x4 game vehicle, following routes along the Kaudulla Tank where elephants gather, especially toward the end of the dry season in September. The tank itself is the main freshwater source in the surrounding area, which is why wildlife concentrates there. You watch them come to drink rather than search across empty landscape. The park's ecosystems revolve entirely around this water, making it the focal point of the day.
Your driver is also your tracker, trained to read the terrain and spot movement in the dry forests and grassland zones. The 24 mammal species include not only the herds you came for but also the albino axis deer said to be unique to Kaudulla in Sri Lanka. Over 160 bird species inhabit the park. You listen for their calls and try to identify them as you move through the habitat. The jeep holds a maximum of six passengers, so the group stays small enough that everyone gets a clear view and the driver can adjust pace and stops for what appears.
Pickup and drop-off are included if your accommodation sits within 5km of the park gate. If you are staying farther out, you can add extended pickup at checkout. The entrance fee is separate and depends on which option you select: either the jeep-only booking, where you pay the park fee in cash on arrival, or the jeep-with-tickets option, where entry is arranged in advance.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What animals am I most likely to see on the Kaudulla safari?
Elephant herds are the main draw, especially in September at the end of the dry season when they come to the Kaudulla Tank to drink. The park also holds 24 mammal species total, including the albino axis deer unique to Kaudulla, plus over 160 bird species and 25 reptile species. The tank is the central freshwater source, so wildlife concentrates there.
How many people travel together in the jeep?
The 4x4 game vehicle holds a maximum of six passengers per jeep, keeping the group small so everyone has a clear sightline and the driver can adjust stops for what appears during the drive.
Is hotel pickup included in the safari booking?
Pickup and drop-off are included if your hotel is within 5km of the park gate. If you are staying farther away, you can arrange extended pickup at checkout for an additional cost.
What is the Kaudulla Tank and why does it matter for the safari?
The Kaudulla Tank is an ancient water reservoir built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD and now serves as the main freshwater source for the surrounding 6,900-hectare park. Because it is the only reliable water in the area, wildlife congregates there to drink, making it the focal point of the safari route and the reason elephant sightings are reliable.
Do I need to pay the park entrance fee separately?
It depends on which option you choose at checkout. The jeep-only booking means you pay the entrance fee in cash when you arrive at the park gate. The jeep-with-tickets option includes the entrance fee arranged in advance, so nothing extra is due on the day.
What kind of vehicle is used and what is the terrain like?
You travel in a 4x4 game vehicle built for rough terrain, which covers the park's dry evergreen forests, abandoned cultivation lands and grassland zones. The terrain is uneven and requires a vehicle designed for off-road driving, so the 4x4 is essential for reaching the areas where wildlife congregates.
