Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Polonnaruwa ruins and safari

  • Visit Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum
  • See Palace of King Parakramabahu
  • Tour Polonnaruwa ancient city ruins
  • Enjoy jeep safari at Minneriya National Park

The experience

The Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum opens the day, walking you through statues, stone carvings and pottery that frame what you'll see in the ruins themselves. Then you move into the ancient city: a UNESCO World Heritage Site spread across open ground where you can wander the Sacred Quadrangle, stand before the colossal rock-cut Buddhas of Gal Vihara, and trace the remains of the Royal Palace. The vast Parakrama Samudra reservoir, engineered by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, still holds water and still marks the city's ingenuity in irrigation. This is not a crowded monument. It reads as a peaceful, open-air museum where ancient architecture sits among lush greenery.

If you book the safari option, the afternoon shifts to a 4x4 jeep into Minneriya National Park (or Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco, depending on seasonal wildlife movement). The park is famous for hosting the largest elephant gathering in Sri Lanka. You travel with a driver who knows where the herds move and when they drink. The jeep itself is built for the terrain and for sightlines across the landscape. Stunning lakes and open ground make the animals visible from a distance, and the season determines what you'll see, but elephants are the draw here, and they come to these parks reliably.

Hotel pickup runs from Sigiriya or Habarana, and the driver returns you at the end of the day. The tour runs 5 to 6 hours total. Bring a camera. The operator notes that every corner of Polonnaruwa offers a photo. Bottled water is included. Wear sun protection and comfortable walking shoes for the ruins.

What’s included

  • Private transportation with a driver and vehicle.
  • hotel pickup and drop-off from Sigiriya or Habarana.
  • bottled water throughout the day.
  • an English-speaking guide.
  • and on the safari package, a 4x4 jeep for the Minneriya wildlife portion.

Can I book just the Polonnaruwa ruins without the safari, or does the tour always include Minneriya?

You choose at checkout between two packages: the Polonnaruwa City Explore package, which covers the ruins and museum with a driver and vehicle, or the Polonnaruwa City with Minneriya Safari package, which adds a 4x4 safari jeep and driver for the afternoon wildlife portion. Both include hotel pickup from Sigiriya or Habarana.
