The experience

You're picked up from your hotel and driven to Minneriya National Park in a private jeep with a professional driver and binoculars provided. The park is famous for the Gathering: the name given to the seasonal assembly of Asian elephants that congregate on the banks and bed of the central reservoir, especially during the dry season when water levels drop and grass grows on the exposed tank floor. From June to September, the largest elephant numbers arrive. Year-round you'll see some elephants along with other wildlife.

The safari covers the park's main viewing areas where you watch elephants graze on the reservoir bed and move across the landscape. Beyond the elephants, the park holds deer, wild buffalo, gray langurs, purple-faced leaf monkeys, porcupines and assorted bird species. Minneriya sits within a region that includes three other national parks (Kaudulla, Hurulu Eco Park and Galoya Eco Park), and the elephants migrate between these reserves seasonally, so the wildlife you encounter shifts with the season and the time of year.

Entrance tickets, bottled water, all fees and taxes are included in the price. The driver speaks English and knows where to position the jeep for viewing. Once the safari is complete, your vehicle returns you to your hotel or your original departure point.
