Step-by-step itinerary
Wildlife safari in Kaudulla National Park
- Join morning or afternoon safari session
- Observe wild Asian elephants in habitat
- Spot deer, wild boar, and water buffalo
- Watch various bird species in park
- Explore 6,900-hectare Kaudulla National Park
The experience
Kaudulla National Park holds the largest wild Asian elephant gatherings on earth, and the afternoon safari session is built around that fact. You travel in a private, comfortable jeep with a professional driver who explains the wildlife and landscape as you move through the park. The 6,900-hectare reserve spreads across terrain that supports not just elephants but also deer, wild boar, water buffalo and over a hundred bird species, so sightings shift with the season and the hour.
The tour picks you up from your hotel and drives you into the park, where the jeep becomes your vantage point for the next three to four hours. You'll have binoculars to hand and bottled water to carry you through the heat. The driver navigates the park's routes based on where animals are moving that day. There's no fixed path, so each safari unfolds differently. Afternoon departures work because elephants tend to move toward water sources as the day cools, making herds more visible and more predictable to find.
The tour ends with a return to your hotel. Lunch is not included, so plan to eat before you depart or after you return. Children from age six can join. Younger children sit on an adult's lap. The jeep is built for this terrain and this climate, and the driver's job is to find animals and tell you what you're seeing, not to rush through the park.
