The experience

Minneriya National Park sits about an hour from Anuradhapura and is known for concentrating thousands of elephants around its central lake, especially during the dry season. A driver picks you up from your hotel in the Habarana or Sigiriya area and drives you to the park entrance, where a guide meets you and briefs you on what to watch for. The safari itself runs four hours, split between morning and evening slots: each one catches the elephants at different times of day and offers different light and animal activity.

You travel in a private 4x4 jeep with your guide, who navigates the park's tracks and stops where elephants and other wildlife appear. The gathering can number in the thousands, and you'll see calves alongside massive bulls, plus leopards, sambar deer, and various bird species if conditions allow. The landscape shifts between dense forest and open grassland around the lake, and the guide points out behavior and habitat details as you move through. Bottled water is provided during the drive.

The jeep returns you to your hotel after the safari ends. National Park entrance fees (charged by Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation) are not included in the tour price and are paid directly at the gate when you arrive.
