The experience
How do you learn to cook a cuisine you've never made? Start where the locals do. Buddhima picks you up from your Kandy hotel in a tuk tuk or van and takes you straight to Kandy Central market, a two-storey building packed with the produce, spices and dried fish that define Sri Lankan cooking. You spend roughly an hour there with Buddhima pointing out what each ingredient does and how it works in the dishes you'll make later. Then you shop for the specific items you'll need (fresh vegetables, spices, whatever the day's menu calls for) before the 30-minute drive to her home.
Buddhima's house sits in a small village near the Gadaladeniya temple, a leafy neighborhood in the Kandy countryside. Her mother and two young children (when they're home) are part of the household, and they welcome you into the rustic family kitchen where you'll actually cook. You roll up your sleeves and learn to make Sri Lankan curries (the real technique, the layering of spices, the timing) working alongside Buddhima as she teaches. The menu shifts with the season and adapts to any dietary needs you flag at booking: vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan options are all available.
When the cooking is done, you sit down and eat the meal you made with the whole family. It's not a performance or a demonstration. You're cooking in a working kitchen, learning from someone who cooks this way every day, then sharing the food at a family table. The class includes bottled water and your choice of coffee or tea. Alcoholic beverages are also provided.
