The Experience

A driver arrives at your hotel in the morning, and you settle into a seat for the drive toward Teide National Park. The road climbs through the Canary Islands landscape, and the air gets cooler as the elevation rises. Before the hike starts, there are two stops: first at a viewpoint overlooking Pico Viejo and Las Narices del Teide, where you can see the site of one of Tenerife's most recent volcanic eruptions, and then at another overlook where Mount Teide rises above the Las Cañadas caldera and the iconic Roques de García come into view. You get time to photograph it all, and the scale of the place starts to sink in.

The hike itself is about 5 kilometres through the heart of Teide National Park, mostly level with a gradual descent, designed so that beginners and casual walkers don't feel rushed or out of place. Hiking poles are provided if you want them, and the route stays close to the foot of Mount Teide itself: the volcanic formations and open landscape don't stop being impressive for the whole walk.
