The Experience

Your day starts with pickup from your hotel, the airport or your cruise ship, and heads first to La Laguna, the island's original capital. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built around the university, and the guide walks you through the architecture and the history the buildings hold. From there, the route climbs toward Teide through the Esperanza forest, a stretch of Canarian pines and eucalyptus where you stop at viewpoints to see across the island. The forest sits on the way up, so you move through it rather than spending hours there.

Teide National Park is where the landscape changes. The guide avoids the crowded tourist zones and instead takes you to viewpoints and stops that show the volcanic terrain—the park has been a backdrop for major American films, and you can see why. On the descent, you pass the Chinyero Volcano, the site of Tenerife's last eruption in 1909. The stops are planned to let you stand in the landscape rather than rush through a checklist.

The afternoon moves to the coast. Garachico is an elegant town declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1994; it was rebuilt after a volcanic eruption destroyed it, and the architecture reflects that recovery. Icod de los Vinos is the final stop, where you see the Millenary Dragon Tree, a single tree that has stood for more than a thousand years.
