Your instructor learned paella from her grandmothers and is passing it on to you.

A paella cooking class in Banyalbufar, a village in Mallorca's Tramuntana Mountains, where you walk through the village, then cook and eat a traditional Mallorcan paella at your instructor's home. You'll learn the steps and secrets of the dish—made with seafood, or vegetarian or meat if you prefer—starting with local appetizers and ending with a seasonal dessert, all included. The experience lasts about six hours and takes place on a home porch overlooking a garden.

The Experience

Banyalbufar sits in the Tramuntana Mountains, and the class begins with a walk through the village itself—its history, streets and views—before you arrive at Ca Tothom, the instructor's home. If walking isn't for you, you can skip that part and meet directly at the house at noon; parking details come once you book. Either way, you'll start with local appetizers and a chance to settle in before the cooking begins.

The paella happens on the home's porch, which overlooks the garden. Your instructor guides you through every step—the rice, the stock, the timing, the seasoning—sharing the techniques her grandmothers taught her. You choose the version: seafood (the traditional way), vegetarian, or meat, and she'll prepare the ingredients accordingly. The kitchen is set up for you to work, and you'll cook the dish together, then sit down to eat it while it's still warm. Local wine, soda and water are included throughout.

The home sits on land your instructor's father settled over 15 years ago, and you won't be alone—cats, dogs, chickens and other animals move through the space, adding an unhurried, lived-in quality to the afternoon. Dessert changes with the season. The whole experience runs about six hours from start to finish, and coffee or tea comes at the end.

What’s included

  • Local appetizers before cooking.
  • all ingredients for the paella.
  • wine, soda and bottled water.
  • lunch (the paella you've made).
  • seasonal dessert.
  • coffee and tea.

Is this one for you? This class works best for small groups or couples who want to learn a skill rather than watch a demonstration—you're cooking the whole dish yourself, not observing from the side. If you're traveling with someone and want a half-day activity that ends with a meal you've made, or if you're interested in how a family recipe actually gets built, this fits better than a standard cooking tour.

Top questions

Can I do the paella class if I don't want to walk through the village first?

Yes. The walk is part of the experience, but if you'd rather skip it, you can meet your instructor at the home at noon instead. She'll send parking information and directions once you book.

What kind of paella will I learn to make?

The traditional version uses fish and seafood, but you can choose a vegetarian or meat paella instead. Let your instructor know your preference when you book, and she'll have the ingredients ready.

What's included in the six-hour class?

Local appetizers before you start cooking; all the ingredients for the paella; wine, soda and bottled water throughout the day; the paella itself for lunch; and a seasonal dessert and coffee or tea at the end.

Will I be cooking alone or with other people?

The class is small and intimate—you'll cook with your instructor and any others in your group, in a home setting on the porch overlooking the garden.

What is Ca Tothom?

Ca Tothom means "The House of Everyone" in Catalan. It's the instructor's home in Banyalbufar, where her father settled over 15 years ago. The kitchen sits on the porch, and the property is also home to cats, dogs, chickens and other animals.
