Best Diving Spots in Gran Canaria: Reefs, Wrecks & Local Marine Life

You’ll dive six times in three days across Gran Canaria’s top sites—reefs and wrecks included—with friendly guides who know every corner of the island’s underwater world. It’s relaxed but well-organized, perfect for anyone wanting to see real local marine life without big crowds.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first morning kicked off early—by 8:30am, I was already at the dive centre, coffee in hand, sorting out the paperwork. The place had that faint salty smell you only get near the ocean, and a few other divers were already chatting about yesterday’s sightings. Our guide, Luis, ran through the plan for the day and checked our certification cards before we started gearing up. There’s something about slipping into a wetsuit that makes the adventure feel real.

We loaded our kit into a minibus—sometimes it’s a boat instead, depending on the site—and headed out. The drive took us past sleepy villages and banana plantations; you can spot locals setting up their fruit stalls if you look out the window. Each day brought us to a different dive site around Gran Canaria. Some days we’d walk straight off the shore into clear blue water; other times we’d hop onto a small boat bobbing at the dock. The guides always picked spots that matched everyone’s experience level—no pressure if you’re newer to diving.

The dives themselves? Always two in the morning, usually on reefs or exploring old wrecks scattered along the coast. I remember drifting over volcanic rock formations one day and spotting a shy angel shark half-buried in sand. On another dive, we found schools of barracuda weaving through an old shipwreck—it’s quiet down there except for your own bubbles and maybe the distant click of shrimp. By around 2pm we’d be back at base, rinsing off gear and swapping stories about what we saw underwater.
