The Experience

First morning, I found myself slipping into a wetsuit by the pool—nerves and excitement mixing as the sun crept over the hotel rooftops. Our instructor, Marta, greeted us with a grin and a quick safety chat. The water was cool but not cold; you could smell sunscreen and hear the faint clatter of breakfast plates from the café next door. We started slow—mask clearing, regulator recovery—Marta watched every move but kept things relaxed. By noon, I was already more comfortable breathing underwater than I expected.

Day two kicked off early again, this time at Amadores Beach. The sand felt warm underfoot even before 10am. We geared up right on the promenade—locals jogging past, kids chasing pigeons nearby. Sliding into the Atlantic was a rush; saltwater tasted different than pool water, and there’s this hush once you’re below the surface. Fish darted around us as we practiced buoyancy and navigation skills from yesterday. Marta stayed close but let us explore a bit—she pointed out a shy octopus tucked under a rock that I’d have missed on my own. By lunchtime, I felt like part of another world.
