The Experience

“You look nervous,” our dive instructor grinned, handing me the wetsuit outside our van. I probably was — I mean, I’d never tried scuba diving before, and here we were on this half-day trip in Gran Canaria, standing in the salty morning air just off Playa del Inglés. The other folks in our group joked about who would spot a parrot fish first. I was mostly focused on not tripping over my own feet as I wriggled into the suit. The sand felt cool underfoot, which surprised me since the sun was already out.

Our guide, Marta (she’s from Las Palmas — she told us her whole family dives), ran through the basics with us right there on the beach. She had this way of explaining things that made it all sound simple, even though my brain was buzzing with “what if” questions. Breathing underwater for the first time is… weird. Not scary exactly, but like your body keeps waiting for you to mess up. But then you see these flashes of color — parrot fish darting around, a sleepy-looking sting ray half-buried in sand — and suddenly you forget about everything else except what’s right in front of your mask.

I kept drifting a little too close to Marta (she just tapped my arm and pointed at a moray eel peeking out — its mouth opening and closing like it was chewing on secrets). At one point, someone behind me let out a muffled laugh through their regulator when a crab scuttled sideways between us. It’s quieter down there than I expected; all you hear is your own breathing and sometimes distant clinks from someone adjusting their gear.

Back on shore, peeling off the wetsuit felt almost as satisfying as getting into it. There was this faint smell of salt and neoprene that stuck to my skin all afternoon. We loaded back into the van — everyone talking at once about what they’d seen or missed — and headed back toward Maspalomas. I still think about that feeling: floating weightless with nothing but blue all around you.
