The experience

You arrive at the dive center, try on your suit and check your equipment with your instructor. If you haven't dived in a while, you can run through a short review of the key exercises in the water before heading out. The instructor plans the dives with you based on your log and how you're feeling that day. If you've been away from diving, the first site stays shallow (up to 12 meters) where you'll see plenty of fish and the volcanic rock formations that make Tenerife's underwater world distinctive. Deeper dives go to 30 meters if your experience supports it.

Each dive lasts 40–60 minutes depending on how much air you use. Between dives you get a 45-minute break. The whole outing, from when you're picked up at your hotel to when you're dropped back, runs 5–6 hours. You're never in a large group. The operator keeps numbers small so your guide stays close and can respond to how you're doing in the water. Full equipment is provided. Bring your own swimsuit and dry clothes to change into afterward.
