Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore DMZ tunnel and local landmarks

  • Visit 2nd Tunnel in DMZ
  • Tour Peace Observatory
  • Walk Pocheon Sky Bridge
  • See Bidulginang Falls

"You can’t take photos here," our guide said quietly as we shuffled into the mouth of the DMZ 2nd Tunnel. I could feel the air change — colder, damp, a bit metallic. The walls were rough under my hand, and every so often you’d hear boots echoing ahead. I kept thinking about how close we were to North Korea; it’s strange, knowing there’s just rock and history between you and another world. Our guide, Minji, pointed out old drill marks and explained how the tunnel was discovered — her voice was calm but you could tell she’d told this story a hundred times. Still felt heavy though.

After that, we climbed up to the Peace Observatory. It’s got these big telescopes aimed right over the border — you can actually see North Korean guard posts if the weather’s clear (we got lucky; it was crisp but not too cold). There was a group of schoolkids visiting too, all giggling and pushing each other while their teacher tried to keep them focused. Kind of funny contrast with all the military stuff around. The exhibition inside had maps and models — some of it went over my head but I liked seeing people tracing lines on glass cases, trying to make sense of it all.

I didn’t expect to care much about a bridge but wow — standing on Pocheon Sky Bridge was a whole different feeling. The wind up there is sharp and loud in your ears; you can look down straight into Hantangang Geopark’s cliffs. Someone behind me muttered something about “Crash Landing on You” (I haven’t seen it), but honestly I just watched sunlight flicker off the rocks below. We walked towards Bidulginang Falls after that — there’s this earthy smell as you get closer, mossy and fresh. The waterfall isn’t huge but the way it tucks into dark basalt columns makes it feel kind of secretive. Our guide told us about doves nesting behind it ages ago; I tried to imagine what that sounded like.

The drive back felt quiet compared to everything else — maybe everyone was tired or just thinking things over. I still think about that first step underground, how silent everyone got for a second before someone cracked a joke about helmets looking silly. So yeah, if you’re curious about history or just want weirdly beautiful scenery near Seoul, this DMZ 2nd Tunnel day trip is… well, not what I expected in a good way.
