The Experience

I didn’t expect the colors of Pena Palace to look so unreal up close. Our guide, João, grinned when he saw my face—he said the fog sometimes rolls in and hides it completely, but today the towers were bright against a sky that couldn’t decide if it wanted to rain or not. The stones felt cool under my hand and there was this faint smell of wet pine everywhere. We wandered terraces and peered into the chapel—no long lines (thank god), just a few other groups and João telling us how the king basically built his own fantasy castle here. I’m still not sure if I believe all of it.

Sintra village was busy but somehow cozy at the same time. João pointed out Piriquita bakery and insisted we try travesseiros—flaky, warm, sweet with almond paste inside. I burned my tongue a bit because I was impatient (worth it). We had about two hours to explore or grab lunch; some people dashed off for photos of Quinta da Regaleira or Monserrate Palace from outside, but honestly I just liked watching locals chat over coffee in tiny tiled cafés. There’s something about old men arguing over football that makes you feel like you’re really somewhere else.

Cabo da Roca was wild—wind whipping so hard I had to hold onto my hat. You can see where Europe just drops into the Atlantic, cliffs sharp and raw. João joked that if you threw a message in a bottle here it might end up in America (not sure about that physics). Afterward we drove along Guincho Beach—sand blowing across the road—and ended up in Cascais. It’s fancier than I thought: pastel houses, little boats bobbing in the harbor, kids chasing pigeons by the water. We had free time to wander before heading back along the Estoril coast. The light was gold over the ocean—I keep thinking about that drive home.
