The Experience

I’d seen pictures of Sintra before, but nothing really prepares you for how weirdly enchanting it feels in person. The morning started with our guide, João, who greeted us with this big grin and a bag of homemade biscuits (his mom made them—he was very proud). We all piled into the van and set off from Lisbon, music playing softly. I caught that first whiff of eucalyptus as we wound up into the hills—honestly, I didn’t expect Sintra to smell so green.

Quinta da Regaleira was first. João led us through mossy tunnels and past stone towers while telling these half-whispered stories about secret societies—he clearly loves this place. There’s something about touching the cold stone in the Initiation Well that gave me goosebumps (maybe just the damp air). Cabo da Roca was next—the western edge of Europe, all cliffs and open sky. It’s cliché to say you feel small looking out at that view but…well, you do. On the way back we stopped in this forest that felt straight out of some fantasy movie—huge boulders covered in lichen, sunlight slanting through pine needles.
