You meet at the Portimão pier for a safety briefing, then board the RIB — a boat built to move fast and fit into tight spaces. The captain and guide handle the route while you settle into comfortable seating with views across the water. The boat sails past the Fort of Santa Catarina, a coastal fortification that rises from the rocks, and the castle of Ferragudo, which sits on the cliffs above a fishing village. These stops frame the journey, but they are the opening act.

The Benagil Caves are the reason the boat exists. They are accessible only from the water, and only when the sea allows it safely — the skipper and maritime authorities assess conditions and make that call. When entry is possible, you motor into an opening in the cliff face and find yourself inside a cathedral of stone, with light pouring through an opening at the top and illuminating a golden sand beach on the cave floor. The boat's size and agility let it reach positions larger vessels cannot. The whole tour takes 90 minutes from pier to return.

Automatic life jackets are provided and required; the operator charges €70 per jacket if one is purposely damaged. Infants sit on an adult's lap. The boat operates in all weather conditions suitable for the sea, but rough conditions or unsafe cave entry means you see the coast from the water instead — the captain decides based on real-time assessment, not a forecast made days ahead.
