Pastel de Nata Baking Class in Lisbon: Make 3 Pastéis
You make the puff pastry yourself, not just the filling.
A hands-on pastel de nata masterclass at Nat'elier in downtown Lisbon where you prepare Portugal's most iconic pastry from scratch under a professional pastry chef's guidance. The 2-hour class includes laminating dough, shaping with traditional technique, and baking at least 3 pastéis de nata in a real professional kitchen; you eat them warm afterward with a drink of your choice and receive the recipe by email. Children from age 8 are welcome, and no baking experience is required.
The Experience
If you have a free afternoon in Lisbon and want to do something with your hands instead of walking another museum, this is the class that fills it. You'll work in Nat'elier's actual professional kitchen in the city center—not a tourist studio, but the place where they bake for customers every day. A pastry chef trained by João Batalha, Nat'elier's head chef and co-founder, walks you through each stage: mixing and laminating the dough from scratch, preparing the custard, shaping each pastry using the traditional technique, and baking them in a professional oven. Most baking classes in Lisbon stop at the filling; this one starts with the dough.
The class runs 2 hours. You'll make at least 3 pastéis de nata by hand, and the pace is built so you're not standing around watching—you're working the whole time. After everything comes out of the oven, you sit down to eat what you made, still warm, with a hot or cold drink (coffee, tea, soft drink, or water). If you want to take extras home, you can. The recipe arrives in your email after the class, so the thing you learned doesn't stay in the kitchen.
Children from age 8 can join, and they work alongside you—no experience needed on anyone's part. The setup is designed to be approachable without being simplified; you're learning the real method, just with clear guidance. If you have dietary requirements, mention them when you book.
What’s included
- All equipment and ingredients.
- 3 pastéis de nata you've made, eaten warm with a choice of coffee, tea, soft drink or water.
- a certificate of achievement.
- the full recipe sent via email after the class.

Is this one for you?The class runs 2 hours straight, so you're working the whole time rather than watching a demonstration—book this if you want to actually make something with your hands, not just learn about it. The professional kitchen and real pastry chef mean you're learning the method that works, which takes focus, but that's what makes the recipe you take home actually work when you're back in your own kitchen.

What exactly do I make during the pastel de nata class?
You prepare at least 3 pastéis de nata entirely by hand: mixing and laminating the puff pastry from scratch, preparing the custard filling, shaping each pastry using traditional technique, and baking them in the professional oven. This is a full hands-on experience, not a demonstration.
Can I bring my children, and will they be able to keep up?
Children from age 8 are welcome and work alongside you throughout the class. No previous baking experience is required for anyone, and the pastry chef guides each step so the pace works for mixed ages and skill levels.
What do I do with the pastéis de nata after I bake them?
You eat them warm immediately after the class, served with a drink of your choice—coffee, tea, soft drink, or water. You can also take any extras home with you, and you'll receive the full recipe by email so you can make them again.
Is this class held in a real bakery or a cooking school?
Nat'elier is a working professional bakery in downtown Lisbon. Since 2018, this is Portugal's only pastel de nata baking class held inside an actual bakery, so you're learning and baking in the same kitchen where they produce pastries for customers.
How long does the class take, and what's included?
The class is 2 hours. Included are all equipment and ingredients, the 3 pastéis de nata you make, a hot or cold barista-crafted drink, a certificate of achievement, and the recipe sent to your email. Water is also provided throughout.
Do I need any baking experience to join?
No previous experience is required. The pastry chef trains you through each technique step by step in a welcoming setting designed to make the experience approachable and rewarding for every guest, regardless of background.
