The Experience

“You’ve never tried pisco like this before,” our guide grinned as he handed me the first tiny glass. I’d just met him — Luis, from Barranco — but by the second bar, he was already teasing me about my Spanish (fair). The whole thing started outside Kennedy Park, where the air smelled like street popcorn and that faint sea breeze you get in Miraflores after sunset. There were maybe a dozen of us, all strangers at first. Someone from Germany tried to say “salud” with a perfect accent; I definitely didn’t.

The bars are all close together, so we just walked — no taxis or anything. Each place had its own vibe: neon lights in one, old wooden tables in another. At the second stop, they poured us a shot of something that burned (in a good way), and we played some ridiculous game involving charades and local slang. I lost badly but ended up laughing so hard my face hurt. The main keyword here is Miraflores nightlife — it’s loud but friendly, not at all what I pictured before coming to Lima.

By the time we reached the club (or was it bar number four? things blurred), music was thumping and everyone danced like nobody cared. Luis kept checking in on people — making sure nobody got lost or left out. I noticed how locals greeted each other with those quick cheek kisses; it’s small but feels welcoming if you’re new here. I still think about that walk back through Miraflores at 3am — shoes sticky from spilled rum, voice hoarse from singing along to songs I barely knew.
