The Experience

The day didn’t start exactly smooth — I almost missed the pickup because I was hunting for a coffee that wasn’t instant (if you know, you know). But our guide, Carla, just grinned when I finally showed up breathless outside my hotel in Miraflores. She handed me a bottle of water and said we had plenty of time. The air smelled faintly salty from the Pacific as we walked along the Malecón, past those wild mosaic walls at Love Park. There were couples everywhere taking selfies by that huge kissing sculpture — honestly, it’s bigger than you think. I tried to say “Parque del Amor” properly; Carla laughed and said my accent was “muy simpático”.

San Isidro felt quieter somehow — maybe it was the old olive trees or just the way people strolled through the park like they had nowhere urgent to be. Carla pointed out some mansion with baroque details I would’ve missed on my own. I touched one of the gnarled olive trunks (couldn’t help it), cool and rough under my palm. We passed a street vendor selling something that smelled sweet and fried but I never caught what it was called. It’s funny how every district in Lima has its own rhythm.

Downtown got busier quick — horns honking, vendors shouting over each other near Union Street. The historic center of Lima is a lot: grand buildings, gardens tangled with flowers, everyone moving fast except us. At San Martin Square, Carla told us about protests that happened there — she seemed proud but also tired talking about politics. We ducked into a tiny drinks shop for Pisco shots (burns a bit going down) before heading into the San Francisco Convent. The catacombs were colder than I expected and smelled like old stone and dust; walking those underground corridors with bones stacked everywhere made me feel small but weirdly calm too.

I still think about that hush in the library room — sunlight slanting through high windows onto ancient books nobody touches anymore. The whole tour felt like flipping through different chapters of Lima’s story with someone who actually lives here. Anyway, if you’re looking for a day trip in Lima that covers both Miraflores and the historic center without feeling rushed… this one really sticks with you.
